2019 Year in Review

In our Inaugural year, the Adult and Community Programs offered everything from food to holiday celebrations to laughter:

  • We served 3,340 Congregate meals and continued our delicious tradition of “Chicken Thursday.”
  • More than 1,800 people in need received food from Sara’s Pantry. All the food is donated through the generosity of the Commission on Economic Opportunity and community members.
  • Michael Smerconish, radio host, tv presenter, columnist, author, lawyer, presented to a standing room only crowd at our first major program.

  • We asked four questions, drank four cups of wine or grape juice, munched on matzah and found the afikomen at our annual Community Passover Seder, offering a place for more than 200 people to begin the holiday.
  • In honor of Yom HaShoah, more than 200 people attended as we screened the film, “Who Will Write Our History,” produced by Nancy Spielberg which included a live Skype call to the producer, Roberta Grossman.
  • We ate and laughed with comedian Joel Chasnoff and Israeli chef Lior Lev Sercarz during “Belly Laughs,” a live cooking and comedy show.
  • We commemorated the 80th Anniversary of the St. Louis with Scott Miller of the US Holocaust Museum. JCC Board Member David Schwager shared the harrowing story of his family who were passengers on the St. Louis.
  • The Israeli Scouts performed at the JCC and at the JCC Camp. They sang and danced and introduced our Jewish and general community to the meaning of ruach, spirit.
  • Jan Kasoff, Emmy Award winning cameraman, shared stories from “Behind the Scenes of Saturday Night Live.”
  • We hosted an Israeli Scholar in Residence and enjoyed classes on the art of Israeli paper cutting.
