Mah Jong | Friedman JCC | The Center For Everyone

Mah Jong

Similar to the Western card game rummy, Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols, although some regional variations may omit some tiles or add unique ones. Learn to play this tile game from China with your friends at the JCC.  Upcoming dates will be added to our Calendar once we reopen!

Learn Yiddish

Literally speaking, Yiddish means “Jewish.” Linguistically, it refers to the language spoken by Ashkenazi Jews — Jews from Central and Eastern Europe, and their descendants. Though its basic vocabulary and grammar are derived from medieval West German, Yiddish integrates many languages including German, Hebrew, Aramaic and various Slavic and Romance languages.

Upcoming dates will be added to our Calendar once we reopen!  In the meantime, learn about the history of Yiddish HERE.

Rummique | Friedman JCC | The Center For Everyone

Rummique

Come and join us for a game. New players are always welcome!.

Rummique is a tile-based game for 2 to 4 players, combining elements of the card game rummy and mahjong. There are 104 number tiles in the game and two jokers. Players have 14 or 16 tiles initially and take turns putting down tiles from their racks into sets of at least three, drawing a tile if they cannot play.

In the Sabra version, the first player to use all their tiles scores a positive score based on the total of the other players’ hands, while the losers get negative scores. An important feature of the game is that players can work with the tiles that have already been played.

Upcoming dates will be added to our Calendar once we reopen!
