Pop-Up Workshop: Matisse “Cut-Outs”
Artist Henri Matisse (1869 – 1954) created some of his best-known art in the final decade of his life, and he made it from the simplest materials: shapes cut from colorful sheets of paper. He described these “cut-out” works as “drawing with scissors,” and he used this technique for works of various sizes and subjects.
We will create our own colorful collàges using these same materials (paper, paint, scissors) with shapes inspired by Matisse. There will be many samples of his designs to look at and work from! This is a fun activity that encourages us to tap into our “inner child” and play with colors and shapes.
