Exploring the Arts at The Friedman JCC

Everyone  is invited to embrace your creativity, reflection, and connection at our  Exploring the Arts programs. Featuring an enriching Art Appreciation- Art History lecture series’ a lineup of soulful Paint ‘n Sip workshops led by Artist, Nina Davidowitz, whose warm, engaging teaching style makes art accessible and inspiring for all.  The series offers something for everyone—from curious beginners to seasoned art lovers.

More classes and experiences—like stained glass, weaving, creative writing, poetry, musical performances, and a wide range of educational arts programs—are in the works and are all designed to enrich and energize the cultural life of our community.

Art Appreciation Lecture Series:

“American Architecture, Folk Art, and Decor”

Alternating Monday nights from 6:15-7:45 at the Friedman JCC in Kingston.

Join us every other Monday night for a special slide show presentation and lively discussion on the visual arts. This Fall’s topics are inspired by America’s 250th Semiquincentennial – we will explore the uniquely American achievements in folk art, crafts, architecture, décor and illustration. No tests or textbooks, just a wonderful opportunity to meet interesting people and learn something new!

Fall Session: Class meets from 6:15-7:45 at the Friedman JCC in Kingston. Dates: September 28, October 12 and 26, November 9 and 23, December 14. Price: $85 ($75 for JCC members); pop-in for individual classes is $15 per class.

4th Mondays of the month from 6:15 – 7:45 pm. (Unless we are closed for a holiday.)

 

Modern Era, Session One: February 9 and 23, March 9 and 23, April 13 and 27.

Modern Era, Session Two: May 11 and 27*, June 8 and 24* (*5/27 & 6/24 are Wednesdays), July 13 and 27.

Fall Paint ‘n Sip Workshops at the Friedman JCC in Kingston

“Paint ‘n Sip” Workshops are a great way to get creative and connect with fun people. At these one-day, two-hour long workshops participants will complete a finished project to take home. No experience is necessary: follow along step-by-step with me, or go in your own direction…everyone can do it!

All art supplies are included. Price: $45 per person ($40 for JCC members).

Food & Beverages: We’ll have bottled water, paper cups, plates, and napkins, and a few simple snacks. Please feel free to bring juice, soda, wine (or any beverage) and extra snacks to share!

Deadline to Register: Please sign up early to save your spot, and so we have enough time to get supplies for everyone.

Wednesday, October 14th from 6:00 – 8:00pm

“The Coast of Bellangenay” by Paul Gauguin, 1890

Let’s imagine taking an early morning walk along the French coast as we paint our own unique versions of Paul Gauguin’s beautiful ocean landscape. We’ll be using acrylic paints on canvas to create this o scene that features a pink sky with a purple mountain, lavender and light-blue waves and dark, sandy rocks. The composition will be pre-drawn onto the canvas for you, so we can focus on mixing these fabulous colors. Beginners are welcome! Follow along with Nina – everyone can do it!

Sunday, November 15th from 11:00am – 1:00pm

“Landscape at Twilight” by Vincent van Gogh, 1890

This little-known twilight landscape by Vincent van Gogh is full of rich fall colors and will be so much fun to make! We will start by using acrylic paints. Then if you like, further embellishments can be added to your work using markers or oil

pastels. No experience necessary: the main elements of this painting will be pre-drawn onto the canvas for you, so just follow along with me!

Wednesday, December 9th from 6:00 – 8:00pm

“Evening Glow” painting in acrylics

Our holiday-season painting features a nighttime scene with sparkling lights glowing along a path on the water. We’ll learn some fun new techniques to create this magical painting. As always, these workshops are geared for beginners – bring a friend for a fun evening out!
